小学生のとき・・・

俺は小学校低学年までは同じ学年の友だち＋同じ学校の高学年の兄ちゃん姉ちゃんたちと一緒になって公園で遊ぶことが多かった。

俺の同学年の友だちも、４月の初めの２週間くらいは公園で兄ちゃんたちを待ってたりしたけど、もう来ないんだな～と思ったらしく全く公園に来なくなった。
でも俺は梅雨が始まるくらいまでは公園で一人で待ち続けた（ときどき友だちが来ていたが…）。

正直言うと同学年の友だちだけで野球やっても、兄ちゃんたちが投げる剛速球とか、特大ホームランとかに見なれてると、物足りないしつまらない。
それになんだか公園に来なくなった友だちに「裏切られた」みたいな嫌悪感を感じてたから、一緒に遊ぶ気にはなれなかった。


そして待ち続けて約１ヵ月、ゴールデンウィークに入る前くらいだったかな、今日もダメかなんて思ってた夕方に制服姿の全く見たことのない姉ちゃんが公園に来た。
見たことない人だったから最初は不思議に思ってたけど、彼女が「遊ぼうか」って言ってくれたとき、約一か月も待ちぼうけ食らってた俺はマジで嬉しくなった。
そのときはキャッチボールしたり地面に絵を描いて遊んだりした、と言っても俺がハシャギまくってて彼女はそれをぼけーっと見てる感じだったけど。


それで、もう日が暮れるってなったとき、俺が彼女に「もう帰る。今日は楽しかった」みたいなことを言ったら彼女が「もっと遊ぼうよ」と俺の手を取った。

彼女は遊んでる最中はあまり口をきかなかったが、ここではやけに饒舌になった。
俺に「もっと面白い場所がある」とか「もう少しだけ…」とか言ってきた。

俺は「お母さんに怒られるからダメ」って言ったんだけど、彼女は「もうちょっとだけ遊ぼうよ。もう少しだけだから…」と言って手を離さない。
彼女の力がイヤに強かったことを今でも覚えてる。

彼女の目がマジだったのと母さんに怒られるかもっていう恐怖心から、半ば振りほどく形になって俺はお礼だけ言ってその場をかけ出した。


次の日、そのときの現場を友だちに見られていて声をかけられた。
俺は「すげー楽しかったから、お前らも来いよ」と言った。
そしたら友だちにはこう言われた。
「お前一人で遊んでてそんなに面白かったの？」

その日から公園で彼女を待ち続けたけど二度と来ることは無かった。
そして俺が中学生になったある日、沖縄に修学旅行に行くということで、手始めに自分の街の戦時中の歴史を調べることになった。

街の図書館に出かけて資料を漁っていたところ、古い写真が多く載っている本を見つけた。
その本は戦時中のこの街の学業学生についてまとめられていた本で、「戦争中の学生はこんなに辛い生活を送っていたんですね～」みたいな作文を、写真を付けて文章を大幅カットして書けば楽だなと思ってその本をペラペラめくっていた。
その本の１ページにとある写真が載っていた。


その写真は、戦前に建てられた女学院を写していた。
建てられていた場所は俺の行っていた小学校の近く。
この女学院は戦時中に空襲にあって丸ごと焼けてしまった旨が本に書かれていた。

そこに写っていた女学生の制服こそ、俺が小４の時に会った彼女の制服と全く同じものだった。
（と言っても記憶が薄らなので確実とは言えないが…）

彼女は俺をどこに連れて行こうとしたのかな。
３４歳職歴無しニートとなった今では、彼女に連れて行かれた方がマシな人生だったかもしれない。
